In a small village surrounded by tall Iroko trees, there lived a wise old gardener named Baba Tunde. He was known not for his wealth, but for the majestic trees that lined the edges of his compound. Every child in the village loved to visit, watching how he planted seeds with patience and care.

One day, a curious boy asked him, “Baba, why do you bury the seeds so deep? Won’t it take longer for them to grow?”

With a soft smile, Baba Tunde replied, “My son, you must grow down before you grow up. Without strong roots, a tree cannot stand when the winds come. And when a child is not rooted in values, knowledge, and love, their wings may carry them far, but not for long.”

That simple truth; roots before wings, is one we often forget in today’s fast-paced world. In our eagerness to help children soar, we sometimes overlook the grounding they need: identity, resilience, empathy, faith, family, and a sense of community. We hand them tools for flight such as technology, ambition, competition..etc, but without teaching them where they come from, who they are, or how to weather storms.

True growth is not only measured by how high we fly, but how deeply we are anchored. The most impactful leaders, thinkers, and change makers are often those who were first grounded in strong values before they took flight into the world.

As parents, educators, and society, our sacred task is not just to give wings, but to nurture the roots that make those wings steady.
